Magnesium and Your Health

cal-mag-phos-scale                                                            Photo Source: http://www.ameerrosic.com

Magnesium is the fourth most abundant mineral in your body. If you don’t have enough of it, your body simply cannot function at its best. Insufficient cellular magnesium levels set the stage for deterioration of proper metabolic function that typically snowballs into more significant health problems.

As reported by GreenMedInfo [1] researchers have now detected 3,751 magnesium-binding sites on human proteins, reflecting how important this mineral is to a great many biological processes. For example, magnesium plays a role in your body’s detoxification processes and therefore is important for minimizing damage from environmental chemicals, heavy metals, and other toxins.

This important mineral is required by more than 300 different enzymes in your body, which play important roles in the following biochemical processes, many of which are crucial for proper metabolic function:

  • Creation of ATP (adenosine triphosphate), the energy molecules of your body
  • Proper formation of bones and teeth
  • Relaxation of blood vessels
  • Action of your heart muscle
  • Promotion of proper bowel function
  • Regulation of blood sugar levels

Your Best Magnesium Source: REAL Food

Most people can keep their magnesium levels in the therapeutic range without resorting to supplements, simply by eating a varied diet, including plenty of dark-green leafy vegetables. However, it is important to remember that the magnesium content of your foods depends on the richness of magnesium in the soil where they’re grown. GreenMedInfo lists more than 20 foods that are exceptionally high in magnesium, including the following (for the full list, please refer to the original report). All listed portions equate to 100 grams, or just over three ounces:

Seaweed, agar, dried (770 mg)
Spices – basil, dried (422 mg)
Spices – coriander leaf, dried (694 mg)
Flaxseed (392 mg)
Dried pumpkin seeds (535 mg)
Almond butter (303 mg)
Cocoa, dry powder, unsweetened (499 mg)
Whey, sweet, dried (176 mg)

Magnesium Supllements

Magnesium citrate — Magnesium citrate is the most popular magnesium supplement, probably because it is inexpensive and easily absorbed. Since citric acid is a mild laxative, magnesium citrate functions as a constipation aid as well as a magnesium source. It is a great choice for individuals with rectal or colon problems but is unsuitable for those with loose bowel movements.

Magnesium taurate — Magnesium taurate is the best choice of magnesium supplement for people with cardiovascular issues, since it is known to prevent arrhythmias and guard the heart from damage caused by heart attacks. Magnesium taurate is easily absorbed (magnesium and taurine stabilize cell membranes together), and it contains no laxative properties.

Magnesium malate — Magnesium malate is a fantastic choice for people suffering from fatigue, since malic acid — a natural fruit acid present in most cells in the body — is a vital component of enzymes that play a key role in ATP synthesis and energy production. Since the ionic bonds of magnesium and malic acid are easily broken, magnesium malate is also highly soluble.

Magnesium glycinate — Magnesium glycinate (magnesium bound with glycine, a non-essential amino acid) is one of the most bioavailable and absorbable forms of magnesium, and also the least likely to induce diarrhea. It is the safest option for correcting a long-term deficiency.

Magnesium oxide — Magnesium oxide is the most common form of magnesium sold in pharmacies, but it is non-chelated and possesses a poor absorption rate.

Of the many forms of Magnesium supplements available today, a newer form called Magnesium Threonate shows particular promise due to its ability to penetrate cell membranes, even those in your brain.

I want to remind you that calcium and magnesium also needs to be balanced with vitamin D and K2. These four nutrients perform an intricate dance together, with one supporting the other.

Suggested Magnesium daily dose between 400-600mg.

Do I have Thyroid Disease

200 million people worldwide have a Thyroid Disorder.

Of the 30 million people above about half are undiagnosed.

FullSizeRender-1

Every cell in the body has receptors for thyroid hormone. These hormones are responsible for the most basic aspects of body function, impacting all major systems of the body.

Thyroid imbalance could be the source of your biggest health problems. But many people don’t realize that their symptoms are frequently caused by a thyroid disorder or imbalance.

Thyroid hormone directly acts on the brain, the G.I. tract, the cardiovascular system, bone metabolism, red blood cell metabolism, gall bladder and liver function, steroid hormone production, glucose metabolism, lipid and cholesterol metabolism, protein metabolism and body temperature regulation. You can think of the thyroid as the central gear in a sophisticated engine. If that gear breaks, the entire engine goes down with it.

Some Key Facts [1]
• Hashimoto’s thyroiditis is the most common cause of an underachieve thyroid (hypothyroidism). In Europe and the United States it variably affects 2-4 percent of the population, while it occurs more often in women than in men.
• Congenital hypothyroidism: 1 per 3,000 – 4,000 newborns are affected by congenital hypothyroidism in North America, Europe, Japan and Australia, (Genetics Home Reference website).
• Thyroid cancer is the 16th most common cancer worldwide (the 8th among women): for example, in 2013, there were an estimated 637,115 people living with thyroid cancer in the US.
• The incidence rate of thyroid cancer has increased by at least 150% since 1970.
– Without realising, symptoms you are experiencing, could be a result of an underlying thyroid disorder.
– 1 in 10 people worldwide will suffer with some form of thyroid disorder. Thyroid Disorders affect more Women than Men!
– If you are unsure, speak to your doctor and request thyroid pathology and a thyroid ultrasound to be sure.

May 25th is World Thyroid Day

unnamed

This is a Day that essentially belongs to the people—to thyroid patients, pregnant women, those children exposed to inadequate iodine intake, in a word, to all who suffer from thyroid ailments and deserve a better standard of care.

Frankincense – the Liquid Gold

Essential oils have been used for thousands of years for their therapeutic and healing properties as part of the practice of aromatherapy.

Frankincense-treeFrankincense oil is sourced from the resin of the Boswellia carterii or Boswellia sacara small, shrubby tree with white flowers that’s commonly grown in Somalia. This tree is different from many others in that it can grow with very little soil in dry and desolate conditions.

The word frankincense comes from the term “franc encens,” which means quality incense in old French.

When in doubt start with Frankincense

Research shows traditional use of Frankincense in driving away evil spirits (Egyptians, Greeks, Romans, French, Asian folklore and rituals), and if we think of these spirits as obsessions, fears and anxieties which may have become manifest as physical illness, we understand the benefits of applying Frankincense for all occasions. In Somali, Ethiopian, Arabian, and Indian cultures, it is suggested that burning frankincense daily in the house brings good health.

Olibanum_resin

A little bit of oil goes a long way; it should not be ingested in large quantities as it can be toxic.

If you’re purchasing essential oils, avoid oils that say “fragrance oil” or “perfume oil” as these can be synthetic and don’t provide the desired health benefits. Instead, look for oils that say “pure therapeutic grade essential oil”  for the highest quality essential oils.

Frankincense Essential Oil Benefits

FRANKINCENSE: analgesic, anti-bacterial, anti-inflammatory, antiseptic, anti-depressant, astringent, carminative (relieves gas), cicatrizant, cytophylatic (stimulating regeneration of cells), digestive, diuretic, expectorant, sedative, immune boosting tonic, anti-carcinogistic.  In Ayurvedic medicine frankincense (Boswellia serrata), commonly referred to in India as “dhoop,” has been used for hundreds of years for treating arthritis, healing wounds, strengthening the female hormone system and purifying the air. The use of frankincense in Ayurveda is called “dhoopan“.

  1. Balances Hormone Levels

Frankincense oil reduces symptoms associated with menstruation and menopause by balancing hormone levels. It can help relieve pain, cramps, constipation, headaches, anxiety, nausea, fatigue, and mood swings. Frankincense oil also helps with regulating estrogen production and reduces the risk of tumor or cyst development in pre-menopausal women.

2. May Help Fight Cancer, or Deal with Chemotherapy Side Effects

Frankincense has been documented all over the world to have a very strong Cancer deterrent factor –Nicole Stevens has produced current research on effectiveness of essential oils with eliminating cancer. Dr. Hsueh-Kung Lin, published his research on doTERRA’s Frankincense clearly stating that in eliminating many forms of cancerous cells this is the most potent and effective oil he has had the privilege of working with – the fragrance made him more energetic too. Frankincense oil has been shown to help fight cells of specific types of cancer. (4) A 2012 study even found that a chemical compound found in frankincense called AKBA is successful at killing cancer cells that have become resistant to chemotherapy.

3. Managing Emotional and Behaviour Problems – profound psychological and spiritual benefits

Frankincense is the most valuable essential oil for slowing and deepening breathing, helping to allay fear, anxiety, nervous tension and stress. One of the gifts of Frankincense is its’ chemistry – sesquiterpenes–can cross the Blood Brain Barrier (BBB) and facilitates oxygenation of cells for optimal communication at the cellular level. In a study that has already triggered follow-up work, sesquiterpenes were shown to increase the number of certain receptors in the brain and are now considered prospects for treatment of Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s disease and schizophrenia.* (Frankincense, Sandalwood, Valerian, Myrrh, Vetiver research). Frankincense is helpful in allowing the past to be in the past, and creating an environment in which optimism and an expectation of freedom in dwelling on current successes that allow peace and self-acceptance to take place.

In a 2012 study, researchers found that the “behavioral effect [of insensole actetate] was concomitant to reduced serum corticosterone levels, dose-dependent down-regulation of corticotropin releasing factor and up-regulation of brain derived neurotrophic factor transcripts IV and VI expression in the hippocampus. These data suggest that IA modulates the hypothalamic–pituitary–adrenal (HPA) axis and influences hippocampal gene expression, leading to beneficial behavioral effects supporting its potential as a novel treatment of depressive-like disorders.” (*)

4. Heals Skin and Prevents Signs of Aging

Skin treated with the sesquiterpenes allows polar compounds such as water to penetrate more effectively. In skincare, Frankincense is particularly helpful for older skins, and has a definite tonic effect, helping to restore some tone to slack looking facial skin, and slowing down the appearance of wrinkles. Frankincense is safe to use during pregnancy -beneficial for fading of stretch marks, surgery scars or marks associated with pregnancy, and for healing dry or cracked skin. reduces appearance of scars and it may also help reduce the appearance of dark spots caused from acne blemishes.

5. Eases Digestion and Supports Detoxification

It helps to flush out excess water from the abdomen that can cause bloating, and even relieves PMS-related stomach pains.(*) by speeding up the secretion of digestive enzymes. It has been shown to be beneficial in reducing symptoms of leaky gut syndrome, colitis and IBS. (*)

Frankincense oil can also be used for relief from stings such as scorpion stings.

All suggestions shared are effective only with doTERRA CPTG products!

Frankincense-2-572x209

FRANKINCENSE blends well with most floral, woods, spices and citruses, also with patchouli, clary sage, rosemary, basil, vetiver and my favorite mix is with Wild Orange – protector on several levels.

Instant Mind Clarity: Frankincense 3 drops, Wild Orange 3 drops; blend in palm of hands by rubbing palms together and when warm apply to back of neck and forehead and focus on accepting positive thoughts. Makes the Heart Happy.

Dry Skin/Wrinkles on arms and legs: Blend Frankincense EO with DoTerra’s Essential Therapy Hand and Body Lotion and apply to dry areas – especially when going in and out in the cold weather – drink more water to hydrate cells – keep young.

Frankincense is an amazing gift, it helps the cells of our body’s remember how to be perfect again as our original recipe was written. Frankincense seems to be the master mind of oils – it makes everything remember how to be perfect – the cells, the tissues, the organs, the systems, whole body.

Let go of your toxic baggage – spring detox

Spring and autumn are important times of the year to detoxify. A spring detox is especially important as an antidote for the excesses of the winter (think holidays) – first, to detoxify the body and second, to reset the body’s ability to burn stored fat.

Once you reset your ability to burn fat every spring you are resetting your ability to handle stress. There is no better way to deal with your anxiety, depression and exhaustion then letting nature reset fat metabolism.

Nature provides a bounty of food and herbs in Spring to enable us to achieve all of this.

Insomnia, weight gain & premature ageing

Lack of sleep = Stress on the body = Weight Gain, Premature Ageing, Hair Loss, Hormone Imbalances, Infertility and Lowered Immune Function

Bring balance into your life with Matcha Green Tea

A couple tablespoons of coconut oil melted in a cup of herbal tea like matcha green tea per day can help give the body the building blocks to make sleep hormones. Coffee can overstimulate your brain and adrenals, matcha green tea will bring alertness without stimulating effect. It is used by Zen Buddhist monks to stay awake for meditation weeks. The L-theanine in matcha tea creates a sense of relaxation and calm about 30 minutes after ingestion. It stimulates the same alpha waves you activate during meditation. These effects can help counter the jitters that many experience when consuming caffeine. This hit of serenity lasts several hours, with a calm energy rather than a jittery restlessness.

At the same time, those great antioxidants (which are called EGCG by the way), help protect brain cells, keeping them alive and alert and in less danger of cell death. Power up.

Matcha tea and mindfulness go hand in hand. Mindfulness meditation is all about focusing on the emotions, thoughts and sensations occurring in the present moment. In today’s hectic and busy lifestyles, finding peace in mindfulness meditation – dedicating a few minutes of the day to “me time” – is becoming increasingly important.

Mindfulness lets us connect with our inner selves and see our true identities. Various research has confirmed that mindful meditation helps manage emotions, can control pain management, lowering stress and help people sleep better.

Women and Sleep

March 6-13 week is Sleep Awareness Week

Make this year’s Sleep Awareness Week your ‪#‎7Days4BetterSleep‬. Start the week by making time for the sleep your mind and body needs. Most adults need 7 to 9 hours to function properly.  SleepAwareness_Infographic

The 2007 Sleep in America™ poll finds that stressed out American women have no time for sleep, and that stay-at-home mothers are the most likely to sleep poorly. Women’s lack of sleep affects almost every aspect of their lives, making them late for work, stressed out, too tired for sex and left with little time for friends.

About one-half of women say they woke up feeling un-refreshed (50%) and/or were awake a lot during the night (49%) at least a few nights a week in the past month. Learn more about poll results bit.ly/1X9tgjm

Women are more likely to suffer sleep problems like insomnia and to experience excessive sleepiness. In one large study of adult women, roughly 20 percent reported having excessive sleepiness, fatigue, or both, and younger women were especially likely to have sleep troubles. Why are women sleepier than men? This article may give you some insight published by Sleep Foundation.

Having sleep problems? What have you tried to help you sleep better?

One of my favourite things I carry with me when I travel – lavender essential oil.  Lavender oil and chamomile oil are effective at reducing stress, therefore naturally lowering cortisol levels, which is very important for the body when it’s trying to overcome thyroid disease and insomnia.

Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) has a fresh, sweet, floral, herbaceous aroma that is soothing and refreshing. Because it is the most versatile of all essential oils, no home should be without it. It is great for winding down before bedtime, yet has balancing properties that make it just as beneficial for boosting stamina and energy. Lavender is highly regarded for skin and beauty. The French scientist René Gattefossé was the first to discover these properties when he severely burned his hands in a laboratory explosion.

Lavender oil does not mimic estrogen nor does it enhance the body’s own estrogens. It is therefore not a ‘hormone disruptor’, cannot cause breast growth in young boys (or girls of any age), and is safe to use by anyone at risk for oestrogen-dependent cancer (ref. Robert Tisserand, world’s leading expert in aromatherapy.)

Not all essential oil is crated equally – some are diluted or most commonly sold synthetic, so may not have the same effect. Always go with pure therapeutic grade essential oil bit.ly/1GnE0Ax

Worldwide Endometriosis Awareness Week

endometriosis-information

Thu 3rd Mar – Wed 9th Mar 2016

Endometriosis Awareness takes place across the globe during the month of March (and beyond) with a mission to raise awareness of a disease which affects an estimated 176 million women worldwide.

Endometriosis affects women and occurs when tissue, similar to the lining of the womb (uterus) grows in other areas of the body. This tissue grows mainly in the abdominal cavity. However, unlike a period, the tissue remains within the body and bleeds forming adhesions (scar tissue), lesions and blood-filled cysts.

Symptoms of endometriosis include:
  • Infertility has been associated with endometriosis.
  • Nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea—particularly just prior to or during the period.
  • Frequent menses flow or short menstrual cycle.
  • Heavy or long menstrual periods
  • Mood swings and fatigue
  • Gastrointestinal symptoms that mimic irritable bowel syndrome.
  • Pelvic Pain, which may include the following:
  • Painful, sometimes disabling menstrual cramps; pain may get worse over time(progressive pain), also lower back pains linked to the pelvis.
  • Over all Pelvic pain, typically accompanied by lower back pain or abdominal pain.
  • Dyspareunia (painful intercourse)
  • Painful bowel movements
  • Urinary urgency, frequency, and sometimes painful voiding

Determined on a case by case basis, traditional treatments for endometriosis include:
  • painkillers
  • drug therapy
  • surgery
  • hormonal treatments
  • hysterectomy
  • surgical removal

Natural Help:
For any Natural Help, give your body 1 month to heal for every year you have had a problem.

  • Women with endometriosis are likely to have low blood progesterone levels, progesterone resistance, or a short luteal phase.  What this means is that they may be in a state of relative estrogen dominance and/or they may not be making enough progesterone receptors.  This can cause estrogen levels to rise.  When estrogen levels rise, you get too much tissue building up in the endometrium. Reduce Estrogen producing foods such as Soy products, Pasteurized dairy, and non-organic Meats.
  • For Cramps, massage the heel and ankles (as with Reflexology) with 3-4 drops Basil or Geranium. Can also do a lower abdominal massage using 3-4 drops Basil mixed with 1 teaspoon Carrier oil. Message in a clockwise circular direction on the abdomen and a counter-clockwise direction on the corresponding area of the back.
  • For hormonal balance Clarycalm is great essential oil blend
  • Consider taking supplements to help increase your body’s progesterone levels, such as Vitamin C and Chasteberry.
  • Boost your immune system!  Women with endometriosis may have a suboptimal immune system that fails to clear the lesions.  Try implementing probiotics and fermented foods into your routine and avoid sugar! Aloe Vera gel has a powerful anti-inflammatory effect, helps to regulate regulate the immune response and has a broad anti-microbial property. The Aloe stimulates the fibroblasts which produce collagen and elastin, which means they grow faster and heal the damaged areas and membranes. Research has shown that Aloe Vera can increase the rate of healing by about 30%!
Clary Sage can help with homone imbalance. 1-2 drops on inside of ankle, 1x daily.
Eucalyptus radiata can ease inflammation from endotrometriosis.
Lavender helps with cellular regeneration and scar tissue with fibroids.
Cypress helps with circulation.
Frankincense helps with any cancer causing cells…for safety precautions.
Use any of the following recipes to help and to relieve discomfort:
CAUTION: Always conduct a patch test and use Carrier Oil before Implanting Any Essential Oil. Consult your health professional about using additional treatment options.
EO bottle 3
Endometriosis can have a devastating effect on quality of life due to its very painful symptoms; it is the biggest cause of infertility in women, and carries a huge personal and societal cost!

It is time to raise awareness of a disease that affects women – and their families – in their most (re)productive years!
